French Racism

Among the most pervasive hypocrisies of the République Française is the notion that, no matter what, if you're French, you're French, no matter your origin. Your name is Saïd Ben Sedir but you were born in France? No matter, the République says, you're French. End of story.

Except that this is not followed through by the population. Of course there will be racism, it's an intrisic part of human nature. Negating it doesn't make it go away, it only deprives you of ways to recognize and fight it.

Hence, in part, the current unrest in France. For more on this, read this excellent article in the New York Times: What Makes Someone French?

Ever wondered why the screen on a Mac looks so much better? The fonts look rounder, smoother, and the general experience in that of a more polished interface. Well, dears, that's because Mac has anti-aliasing turned on by default, Windows doesn't.

What's anti-aliasing? It's technical so go here to understand.

To turn it on in Windows, do the following:
Control Panel » Display » Appearance » Effects » Check the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:" box and pick ClearType » OK to save.

Sounds stupid like that, but it really does make a huge difference. Beats me why it's not turned on by default in Windows...

I wondered if you could choose Man 4 Man in the search box, you know, or all the closeted Republicans, so I started filling out the lengthy application. But then, on a hunch, I simply checked out the Terms of Use:
2.2 As a condition to use this service you acknowledge that you will not use this service to contact other members for the purpose of homosexual relationships, activities or activism. Openly espousing in a profile as "gay" or any word that delineates homosexuality is also forbidden.
Well, that settles it, don't it? At least they're a little more straight-forward than eHarmony.

Then of course, Scoot's lil' indictement. Doesn't look very good for Turd Blossom either.

Add to that the fact that his brother's handling of Wilma is being criticized left and right in the crucially important state of Florida, the Brownie debacle of the last few weeks, Iran going completely nuts, Delay's indictement, and W's having the worst season ever.

The House of Bush is unraveling, just in time for the midterms. Time to move in for the kill.

Interesting surprise today at the massage place. When my therapist led me into the room, I discovered the implement I was going to be placed in and "worked" on. Needless to say, the urge to run away really fast was nearly overwhelming. Therapist boy restrained me and explained he would basically walk on my back for 15 minutes and then proceed with the regular massage.

Well kids, it was amazing. Think of the deepest, most amazing back massage ever, undoing days of stress, but without the pain. Since the pressure is applied with whole feet, it is much more comfortable. And it is still applied with perfect control.

Granted, it is weird, and it took me a few minutes to be cool having a kid walking on top of me, but it was well worth it.

I was trying to find illustrations for a post about quitting smoking and instead of posting diseased lungs and mouth cancers, I really got stopped in my tracks by this, from LungCancerFact.com:

Now, think about that. An activity you do as a nasty habit is listed alongside asbestos and coal mines as a major cause for lung cancer. That's just fucked up.

[+/-] Read how I quit

Now, here's how I quit. Clearly, I am not a doctor, so you'd be incredibly foolish to blindly follow my advice, but here goes:

Facts

Nicotine is an extremely powerful drug, therefore, quitting is incredibly hard

Having quit is wonderful, seriously

When you smoke, you feed your body with a little under 100 different poisons and permanently increase your heart rate; consequently, when you quit, you gain weight. It's merely your body getting back into health

Patches, gums, pills and other nicotine supplements are a bad idea: they prolong your dependence on nicotine and give you an excuse for failing to quit: "Guess Wellbutrin didn't work for me..."

You will not achieve success if you are not motivated; think about what you're doing to yourself when you smoke, think about the health risks, think about the smoke invading your lungs and clogging your heart

My Method

Cold turkey, but gradual

Set a quit date; it's pretty much set in stone now

Two weeks prior, cut your intake in half; I was at a pack/day, I cut down to 10 cigs per day

One week prior, cut another half; I was then at 5 cigs per day; things started really sucking

On your quit date, don't smoke anymore

What's Next

It will be hard

You will be a mega-bitch for a week, at least

Cravings will come and go; they last usually no more than 5 minutes and are manageable if you keep telling yourself this: "Nobody's got a gun to my head, I can do this"

As corny as it sounds, take it one day at a time

Nicotine takes 72 hours to be completely eliminated from your body; therefore the first 3 days are by far the most difficult, after that, piece o' cake

Never again, under any circumstances, smoke another cigarette/ have a drag/ smoke a cigar: you will have to remain vigilant about this for the rest of your life (why go through the hell of quitting if it's for naught?)
